Portraits

Portraits.
I feel this deserves its own category, because the human face is the most challenging of all subjects.
Unsurprisingly, pop culture art is often the best genre in which to recognize good portraiture, since celebrities are so universally recognized.
I don’t always do photo-realistic portraits, but this does not diminish the difficulty of capturing the nuance of someone’s expressions and features–that elusive spark that allows loved ones to recognize them. Scientists say an entire area of the human brain–the fusiform gyrus–is dedicated solely to facial recognition. No wonder, therefore, that some would say it is the Holy Grail of Art.
